Dragons happen. Stories help. 🐉

Everyone has dragons. Some are loud and fiery. Some are quiet and sneaky. But here’s the good news: dragons can be understood—and even tamed.

In this playful, family-centered experience, we’ll read You’ve Got Dragons by Kathryn Cave and explore big feelings through the power of story. With guidance from therapist Shylayna Southard, families will take part in thoughtful discussion and creative activities designed to help “name the dragon,” reframe challenges, and recognize the strengths already within them.

ABOUT NARRATIVE THERAPY
Narrative Therapy is a gentle, strengths-based approach that uses storytelling to help people separate themselves from their problems. Instead of seeing a challenge as part of who we are, we learn to view it as something we’re experiencing—something we can understand, respond to, and reshape.

For families, this approach builds empathy, communication, and emotional resilience. It reminds us that while dragons may visit, we are still the heroes of our stories.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER   Website
Shylayna Southard is a student therapist in the University of Louisville’s dual Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) and Master of Science in Couple and Family Therapy (MSCFT) programs. Since 2024, she has provided individual and group therapy at the Center for Women and Families, supporting clients through empowerment and healing. She also works with individuals, couples, and families through UofL’s Relationship Solutions Clinic. In her spare time, she enjoys making memories with her five-year-old son.
